New Apple TV streams films, videos, photos to wide screen
Small in size, big on entertainment – that’s the claim for the new Apple TV, which has just been launched in the UK at a cost of £99. The box is less than 10cm square, one quarter the size of the previous model and can be fitted in the palm of the hand. It requires a broadband internet connection and an HDMI cable (not included in the price) to a wide screen TV, providing for the streaming of films, music, YouTube videos, radio stations, podcasts and Flickr photos to the big screen.
Films can be streamed from Apple at a cost of £3.49 for an HD version and £2.49 for Standard Definition. New releases cost a pound extra. A film is available for viewing once it has been fully downloaded. You then have 48 hours to watch and re-watch, with fast forward, pause, and replay options. You must be registered with iTunes to use the service.
TV programmes are not available outside the US, so they must be downloaded to the computer and streamed.
Films and other content from a PC or Mac can be streamed wirelessly via the Apple TV by choosing the “computers” tab on the remote control. ITunes version 10.0.1 must be installed on the computer with the relevant ID and password entered. The device will be controllable through iPhone, iPod or iPad once Apple’s AirPlay software becomes available.
